About Us

About Us

Birch Tree Communities is a non-profit, behavioral health program providing care and supportive housing for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness. We serve approximately 400 members of Birch Tree Communities in 12 branches across the state of Arkansas.

Our members live with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or schizoaffective disorder in a therapeutic community setting. The care and services that we provide include, but aren’t limited to, rehabilitative day treatment, group and individual therapy, medication management, transportation, and supervised group and transitional housing.

Birch Tree Communities is not an emergency, crisis, or acute care facility. If you or a loved one needs immediate help, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency department.

Our Mission

A satisfying life in the community.

At Birch Tree Communities, our philosophy is that members play a defining role in what a satisfying life is to them, and we support and guide them in their journey to mental health recovery and independent living.

We believe that for every person living with mental illness, there is a real expectation of recovery. We are fully committed to support our members in their own unique recovery journeys where they determine the pace and help plan the path.

Our Intentions

The Intentions of Birch Tree Communities are guiding principles that were adopted soon after the founding of the organization in 1989. The intentions serve as a foundation for relationships with our members and set the tone of the recovery environment.

In all that we do, we intend:

  • To be kind.
  • To inspire hope.
  • To respect and befriend men and women overwhelmed by life.
  • To bring a measure of joy into every life we touch.
  • To do no harm.
  • To offer ourselves without discrimination.
  • To be just.
  • To serve with patience, persistence and forgiveness, not regarding symptoms of illness as evidence of failure.
  • To create an environment in which dreams are born, encouraged, and pursued.
  • To be a beginning, not an end.

Our Recovery Philosophy

The ultimate goal at Birch Tree Communities is to eliminate stigma so that individuals recovering from mental illness can be free to choose where they live, socialize, and work.

We want individuals living with mental illness to:

  • Experience a sense of dignity.
  • Be aware of their strengths.
  • Develop self-awareness and insight.
  • Express and pursue their dreams.
  • Enjoy the freedom of making choices.
  • Be free to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them.
  • Know that they are worthy members of the human community.
